Our New STEAM Kits are here!

As a parent of an 11 and 15 year old, I have found that my job as Mom has changed quite a bit. That made me think, there are a lot of parents out there who have had to change. That's why when I found these kits I realized that I would be foolish not to purchase these, because we need to adapt and think in different ways. I'm hoping that this is one way that we can do this.

Here are the kits that I purchased:
All About Dinosaurs Kit
Electronics, Coding & Bots Kit
Engineering Gears and Mazes Kit
Everyday Science Kit
Examine Science and Nature Kit
Explore the Outdoors Kit
I Love Animals Kit
Yoga for Mindfulness Kit

Each kit has different items that make the learning experience more interesting. While we don't have all of them ready to check out, we have a few and we are getting more of them ready. We want to make sure that we can make change easier for parents and I think this is one of those ways.

Depending on the popularity we will make sure to get more (unless we run out of space!)

A big thank you to you parents who are having to change and adapt your jobs as parents. You are all awesome!

Cathy

I love comic books. I love that there are now so many topics ... not just superheros, but non-fiction, classic literature and real life happenings! I love that I can learn a little bit about dinosaurs or physics and a second later I can read the Babysitters' Club. Too much fun for one day. :) We have a HUGE collection of comic books just waiting at Chili for you, from Disney to Iron Man. Here are some suggestions that I have been reading recently:
Picture
Guts
by Telgemeier, Raina

Raina wakes up one night with a terrible upset stomach. Her mom has one, too, so it's probably just a bug. Raina eventually returns to school, where she's dealing with the usual highs and lows: friends, not-friends, and classmates who think the school year is just one long gross-out session. It soon becomes clear that Raina's tummy trouble isn't going away... and it coincides with her worries about food, school, and changing friendships. What's going on?

Picture
Bats : learning to fly
by Koch, Falynn
Every volume of Science Comics offers a complete introduction to a particular topic--dinosaurs, coral reefs, the solar system, volcanoes, bats, flying machines, and more. These gorgeously illustrated graphic novels offer wildly entertaining views of their subjects. Whether you're a fourth grader doing a natural science unit at school or a thirty-year-old with a secret passion for airplanes, these books are for you.
This volume: In Bats, we follow a little brown bat whose wing is injured by humans on a nature hike. He is taken to a bat rehabilitation center where he meets many different species of bats. They teach him how they fly, what they eat, and where they like to live.

Picture
Cheshire Crossing
by Weir, Andy

What happens to Alice when she comes back from Wonderland? Wendy from Neverland? Dorothy from Oz? The three meet here, at Cheshire Crossing -- a boarding school where girls like them learn how to cope with their supernatural experiences and harness their magical world-crossing powers. But the trio -- now teenagers, who've had their fill of meddling authority figures -- aren't content to sit still in a classroom. Soon they're dashing from one universe to the next, leaving havoc in their wake -- and, inadvertently, bringing the Wicked Witch and Hook together in a deadly supervillain love match. To stop them, the girls will have to draw on all of their powers... and marshal a team of unlikely allies from across the magical multiverse.

This whole year should have been Dear Diary Day. So much craziness going on you should have been keeping record of it. I tried to get my kiddos to do it, but could not convince them. I, however write in a journal every night. I do it electronically, but I use a stylus, because I like the act of writing. Since many of you have electronic devices for school, you could do it that way, or just use a notebook! Easy peasey.
It doesn't all have to be words either. It can be doodles or taped on images If you're going the electronic route, emojis, photos or other images could be used.
Need some ideas when writing your diary? Here are some books:
Picture
Diary of a wimpy kid : Greg Heffley's journal
by Kinney, Jeff

Can't start with anything but this "classic" ...
Greg records his sixth grade experiences in a middle school where he and his best friend, Rowley, undersized weaklings amid boys who need to shave twice daily, hope just to survive, but when Rowley grows more popular, Greg must take drastic measures to save their friendship.

Picture
The Night Diary
by Veera Hiranandani
(this one is available on Overdrive right now!)
It's 1947, and India, newly independent of British rule, has been separated into two countries: Pakistan and India. The divide has created much tension between Hindus and Muslims, and hundreds of thousands are killed crossing borders.
Half-Muslim, half-Hindu twelve-year-old Nisha doesn't know where she belongs, or what her country is anymore. When Papa decides it's too dangerous to stay in what is now Pakistan, Nisha and her family become refugees and embark first by train but later on foot to reach her new home. The journey is long, difficult, and dangerous, and after losing her mother as a baby, Nisha can't imagine losing her homeland, too. But even if her country has been ripped apart, Nisha still believes in the possibility of putting herself back together.
Told through Nisha's letters to her mother, The Night Diary is a heartfelt story of one girl's search for home, for her own identity...and for a hopeful future.

Picture
Diary of Sarah Gillespie : a pioneer farm girl
by Huftalen, Sarah Gillespie

Twelve year old Sarah Gillespie and her family struggled to make a life for themselves on the Great Plains. Crops and animals needed constant care. Neighbors depended on one another for survival. Through it all, Sarah wrote down her experiences in a diary. Read her story, and learn about the American frontier from someone who lived on it.

Picture
Dear America series
I thought my soul would rise and fly : the diary of Patsy,a freed girl
by Hansen, Joyce

This is just one of the many in this series that uses diary format to discuss what life would be like for kids during that time period.
Patsy, an orphaned slave with a bad leg and a quiet nature, is considered slow by the Davis family. But Patsy's smart -- smart enough to learn to read and write on the sly. After the Civil War ends and slavery is abolished, Patsy believes Master Davis's promise to pay the former house slaves and to educate the slave children. But when the master ignores his promise to establish a schoo, and the Freedmen's Bureau cannot provide a teacher, Patsy steps in to teach the students to read and write.

So today Miss Valerie asked me to create one of our book bundles with my favorite books ... apparently I'm hungry! HAH! All the books I picked had to do with food!

Dinosaur Kisses - He eats all the animals he tries to kiss.
Very Hungry Caterpillar - He eats everything.
Strega Nona - Big Anthony makes use of Strega Nona's pasta pot and makes some for everyone in the town, but then it backfires!
Red Hen - Anyone going to help the Red Hen make cake? Don't think so!
Edwina the Dinosaur Who Didn't Know she was extinct - Thank goodness she didn't know, she makes the best cookies!
Bear Wants More - He is hungry for berries, but there's never enough.
Drat That Fat Cat - He's so hungry he eats something that goes a little haywire in his belly.
There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly - I love this specific one because the illustrations are so awesome and there are cut outs in the illustrations so you can visibly watch her belly get bigger.
Kitten's First Moon - He wants that Moon that looks like a bowl of milk and darn it, he's going to get it!

Let me know if you get hungry after reading these books too! They're DELICIOUS!

We can fight racism together: The adult edition

Picture
I'm not sure where it will be or when it will be up next, but the Rochester Museum and Science Center has a traveling exhibit called "Take it Down! Organizing Against Racism."

About the Exhibit:
What is racism and how can it hide in plain sight? Explore the story of one local carousel panel and join in the meaningful dialogue it encourages on individual, institutional and structural racism.

In 2016, a panel featuring racial "pickaninny" artwork was removed from the Dentzel Carousel at Ontario Beach Park in Rochester, NY, after being on display for over 100 years. This issue generated controversy in our community and activists have created an exhibit around the piece to show how pickaninny art perpetuates racism by denying the humanity of black children.
Presented in partnership with the City of Rochester, this exhibit is an important opportunity to learn from the past and work together to promote social justice for all. Join in the conversation by viewing the panel at one of its future community locations or participate in one of the partner programs.

Picture
The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness
Alexander, Michelle

Once in a great while a book comes along that changes the way we see the world and helps to fuel a nationwide social movement. The New Jim Crow is such a book. Praised by Harvard Law professor Lani Guinier as "brave and bold," this book directly challenges the notion that the election of Barack Obama signals a new era of colorblindness. With dazzling candor, legal scholar Michelle Alexander argues that "we have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it." By targeting black men through the War on Drugs and decimating communities of color, the U.S. criminal justice system functions as a contemporary system of racial control—relegating millions to a permanent second-class status—even as it formally adheres to the principle of colorblindness. In the words of Benjamin Todd Jealous, president and CEO of the NAACP, this book is a "call to action."

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Suzanne Collins
Hoopla: https://www.hoopladigital.com/title/11950543

Set in the backdrop of the 10th Hunger Games, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes revolves around the adventures of a teenage Coriolanus Snow, who would go on to become the illustrious president of Panem. Falling on hard times, he is tasked with mentoring District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird for the 10th Hunger Games.

Luckily the reader made this book. I'm only about halfway through, but I really care about Coriolanus Snow... whom I should really hate with a passion. Something must happen because so far he is such a caring, wonderful person ... just looked up who reads it ... Santino Fontana, the actor who plays Hans in Frozen.. so he pretends to be nice, when in reality he's a conniving creep. Found that an amusing choice.
He is so sweet to Lucy Gray Baird and wants to be so nice to her, when later on in his life, as President Snow he was a horrible, horrible person. Its so curious how young people can be changed so drastically as they become adults.

So far, its really good! I enjoy it quite a bit. I hope you will too.
