The very beginning of writing

This artwork is by my nephew Brian and it's Spiderman!
What you think might be "chicken scratch" or scribbles is actually the beginning to writing.
In this article in the Educators Voice journal:
The process of drawing and writing in a series stimulates children to make connections between letters, words and visual symbols. It sparks their interest in acquiring the skills to communicate their ideas through images and words.
So while you might just think its  a waste of paper, its actually a stepping stone to their adventures in reading and writing!

One way that you can keep the conversation going is to ask them to tell you a story about what is going on in the picture. Want to keep it going even further? Write down that story in nice big easy to read letters. It lets them see that 1. what they are saying is important enough to write down and 2. What they are saying can become "pictures" on paper.
Why not try and see?
Have a great safe day everyone. Try and enjoy the snow!

Trying something a little different

So I'm trying to learn lots of new things while this thing is happening. And I thought I would share some of my new tidbits. One of the things that I learned is about the importance of play with your little ones. One way of doing that is through songs and "fingerplays" such as "Five little Piggies". Therefor, I will be sharing yet MORE video fun with different fingerplays.
This is what happens when you can't sleep. You go a little crazy. :)

Today I'm reading
Pirates Love Underpants by Claire Freedman
Hope you like it. I had a lot of fun reading it! I also did five little monkeys teasing Mr Crocodile, and my daughter Leila thought it a little creepy that they kept getting snapped up, but what can you do? If they're teasing him he can't help it! He's a crocodile! :)
