National Jelly Bean Day! If you celebrate Easter, you may already have some, but if you don't today's a great day to get some. I'm sure they're all on sale and we must celebrate national holidays the best way we can. :) Don't forget that we have Minecraft tonight at 6pm. Also, we have Teen Friends and Teens Together on Tuesday starting at 6pm (need volunteer hours? This counts!), and Makerspace Open Hours on Thursday from 5-7 pm. We'll keep you busy this week!

Let's start with the sad news. We have cancelled Cathy's Creativity Club due to lack of registrations. Sorry guys. :( For our Family Movie on Tuesday, April 16 at 10am, we will be showing Wreck It Ralph Breaks the Internet. For our teens (ages 13-18) we will be showing The Princess Bride on April 16 at 3pm. For our younger friends we will be dancing and having a blast on April 18 (MY BIRTHDAY!) at 10am. Its called Fitness Fun, but consider it a little more dancing and playing with scarves and eggs fun. Finally, on April 19 at 10am we will be welcoming Jimmy C again for a morning of magic and laughter. For this program we require registration, which you can do on our calendar here.
And it's nice that a day was made especially for me to act foolishly. At storytime today Ms. Valerie and I were only allowing ourselves to be silly ... which is why we made it silly storytime! We read "This is a Taco!" in which the author thinks they're going to tell everyone a general book about squirrels, but the squirrel wants to tell everyone how much he loves tacos. Who can blame him though? Everyday should be Taco Tuesday. Jan Thomas is just a plain silly goose. In "Is Everyone Ready for Fun?" the cows want to have fun on chicken's sofa but chicken just wants to be left alone. No jumping, No dancing and NO WIGGLING! In their book "Rhyming Dust Bunnies" the little dust bunnies like to rhyme (except for the blue one, who likes CAT!) but the big mean grey dust bunny has other ideas. Like silly books? So do we, and we have plenty of them. Come on in and check them out. Know any good jokes? We love those too. Please come in and send them our way! Need ideas? Our joke books are in the non-fiction under 818. Come check them out!
We have cancelled storytimes this week, but for an exciting reason ... Its booksale time! We'll have tons of kids books that you'll be able to get and read to your little ones.
For those of you that might be worried, we have not cancelled Minecraft, Teen Friends, Teens Together and Code Lab. According to USA Today, today is National Napping Day! Don't know about you, but I could sure could use a nap today!
People who regularly don't get enough sleep are usually most affected by the lost hour, said Timothy Morgenthaler, Mayo Clinic's co-director of the Center for Sleep Medicine. People who are sleep-deprived might struggle with memory, learning, social interactions and overall cognitive performance. Some advocate that napping could help. I am down with that! Naptimes could be very useful today. Probably not while I'm on the information desk though. That might be frowned upon. Or would it? I could put a little bell at the desk and you could ring it when you need me. I would quickly pop up from under the desk. Easy Peasy. If you can make it throughout the day, today at 4pm we have Tail Wagging Tutors and at 6pm we have Minecraft Monday! Yipppee! I know. Believe you me. It can be hard sometimes to make a new friend. It can be scary to walk up to someone and say "You're really nice. Can we be friends?" Sometimes though, it's really important. Sometimes, just by saying those words, you can make an important connection with people!
I love when I'm in storytime and one child is trying to hold another child's hand. They're desperately trying to say "You are super cool. I want you to be in my life!" Oh, if only we could all be five years old and comfortable another to walk up to one of the other people in our Zumba class and try to make friends. Not walk up to hold hands or give them a hug ... that's just doomed from the beginning. However saying "Hey! I like when you make jokes when things get too hard. Can we go out for coffee sometime?" That gives me anxiety just thinking about it, but I know its possible. Go out an make new friend today! Too hard? Let your friends know that you love them! This week's storytime theme is Chinese New Year. This year is the year of the pig, so we had some really cute piggy books too. Its fun to celebrate different cultures, even if its only in tiny little ways. This Monday is our monthly Young Librarians group. This time I think we're going to try and create a newsletter to promote the group and promote books. I think it'll be a blast. Hope to see you there! This week is also Lego Club. I expect great things from everyone!
Tonight its all things color! ... the science of color. Doesn't that sound fabulous? Come and join Miss Valerie as we explore the science behind colors.
We're trying new things this year! We want to let young voices be heard, science lovers trying new things, and our maker space explored! Don't worry though, we still have our regular favorites! Just watched this video by two graphic novel writer/illustrators and it made me rethink how I read graphic novels vs novels. They spoke about how illustrators block panels to make you see things a certain way. Things that are called gutters, which are the things that break panels up, can make things more intense if they are dark rather than white. They can also cause fear if they are not in a straight line, but rather a squiggly line. While novels can take a long time describing things, graphic novels can do the same thing in a few panels.
By creating it that way, it encourages the reader to have certain feelings depending on how he has laid it out. We own this new book, so check it out!
I will not even start to talk about manga. That makes you think in completely different ways: the culture, the language (even though its in English, it is sometimes worded differently) and since the Japanese write from right to left, the books are "backwards". This makes kids think in a totally different way which, in my opinion, is amazing. Please check out our graphic novels. I may be a little biased since I buy them, but I think we have a pretty sweet collection! |
