My daughter is super excited about the idea of a National Composting Day. She has wanted to start a composting space for a while now and since we eat a lot but still waste too much of our vegetables, we are perfect for it! Below are some books that you can get from Overdrive or that you can ask for on curbside pickup.

Little House in the Suburbs
by Deanna Caswell and Daisy Siskins
(from Overdrive)
The easy-to-follow advice in this book will show you everything you need to know to enjoy an abundant, independent life on food and products grown in your own back yard.

Attainable Sustainable
by Kris Bordessa
(from Overdrive)

Packed with delicious recipes, natural remedies, gardening tips, crafts, and more, this indispensable lifestyle reference from the popular blogger makes earth-friendly living fun.
Whether you live in a city, suburb, or the country, this essential guide for the backyard homesteader will help you achieve a homespun life—from starting your own garden and pickling the food you grow to pressing wildflowers, baking sourdough loaves, quilting, raising chickens, and creating your own natural cleaning supplies.

Composting : turn food waste into rich soil
by Hanson-Harding, Brian
(at Chili Library)

Composting is a way to speed up the natural process of decomposition and return organic materials to the soil. Instead of throwing away organic waste, items such as fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds, and yard trimmings can be composted. The result is a dark, crumbly material that can be used to improve the soil and beautify gardens, parks, and lawns.
The complete compost gardening guide
by Pleasant, Barbara
(at Chili Library)
Compost, gardener's gold, is the heart of any good gardening system. "The Complete Compost Gardening Guide" takes the mystery out of composting and shows gardeners how to compost their way to a garden that requires less digging, weeding, mulching, and even planting.

But I should definitely pick my ukulele up today!

Just checked out from Overdrive:
Ukulele in a Day For Dummies
by Alistair Wood

Who doesn't want to learn how to play the ukulele? The uke is hot. And learning to play this instrument at a basic level is quick and easy for even the most inexperienced musicians - especially with Ukulele in a Day For Dummies! With this great introductory package, readers get the information they need to pick up a ukulele and try it out.
Hot ukulele? WOW! I'm cool with that. :)
Have another instrument you are interested in? Check out my "musical instruments" search. That has some basic books to get you started and then .... now that we have curbside hours you can also ask for a physical book! How incredibly happy that makes me.
Curious about certain musical instruments? Check out this kids book list of descriptions and learning more about different musical instruments.

Today is national no dirty dishes day ... but my family needs a no dirty house day!

I'm sure I have a few dishes in my sink, but somehow what I have more of is my kids stuff all over the house. Since this started I thought, oh I will have time to make my house look like a masterpiece, like something you see in magazines. However, as soon as an inch of the house looks lovely, the rest of the house looks like a tornado happened.

How about the rest of you? Feeling that way too? What do you do to combat your children's magnificent ways of destroying any sense of cleanliness that you may have?

What do you use for chores and getting the kids to actually do them?
This article from Fatherly has some interesting chore apps. Do you use apps, calendars, paper charts, or do your kids have everything dedicated to memory?

Cleaning House: A Mom's Twelve-Month Experiment to Rid Her Home of Youth Entitlement
by Kay Wills Wyma

I just checked this out on Overdrive.

Cleaning House is her account of a year-long campaign to introduce her five kids to basic life skills and the ways meaningful work can increase earned self-confidence and concern for others.
With irresistible humor and refreshing insights, Kay candidly details the ups and downs of equipping her kids for such tasks as making beds, refinishing a deck chair, and working together. The changes that take place in her household will inspire you to launch your own campaign to dislodge your kids from the center of their universe.

I did a search on "cleaning house" on Overdrive and there are actually quite a few books we own. Unfortunately, I need to not read the books, just actually pull up my big girl pants and get going.

I hope she gives me some life skills to help me teach me kids to get off their butts and help keep my house from exploding. Somehow I think my kids need one of those reality show gurus to help us, but hopefully this will be a start of a new life. :)

Frog and Toad are Friends
by Arnold Lobel

One of the first books I remember reading when I was a kid. It is an easy reader for all you beginning readers.

From writing letters to going swimming, telling stories to finding lost buttons, Frog and Toad are always there for each other—just as best friends should be.
Toad Rage
The Toad Books Series, Book 1
by Morris Gleitzman

Limpy's family reckons humans don't hate cane toads, but Limpy knows otherwise. He's spotted the signs: the cross looks, the unkind comments, the way they squash cane toads with their cars. Limpy is desperate to save his species from ending up as pancakes. Somehow he must make humans see how fabulous cane toads really are. Risking everything, he sets off on a wart-tinglingly dangerous and daring journey to . . . the Olympics?

Charlie and Frog Series, Book 1
by Karen Kane
All Charlie Tickler wants is for his parents to listen.

Charlie's parents have left him (again). This time they are off to South Africa to help giant golden moles. And Charlie? He's been dumped with his TV-obsessed grandparents. Lonely and curious, Charlie heads into the village of Castle-on-the-Hudson, where a frightened old woman gives him a desperate message-in sign language. When she suddenly disappears, Charlie is determined to find answers.

I felt like the luckiest Mom ever yesterday

My kiddos spoiled me rotten yesterday. It felt lovely. I woke up and walked downstairs to my living room couch all set up for me to get comfy. Leila let me know that under no circumstances was I to help with breakfast. She also let me know that I could decide what to watch on tv. WOW! I can imagine in your houses that's a big deal too!
She made me scrambled eggs with salsa (in the microwave) and a "griddle cake" ... don't know if that's an actual word, but Leila got a mini electric grill and made me a pancake in it. After we cuddled a bit. :)
Then she had to make me lunch, so she made me a english muffin grilled cheese in (you guessed it) the mini grill.
After lunch we went for a lovely bike ride where I tried to run and keep up. It certainly burned off some of the food calories! They were biking fast!
Then later in the afternoon we video called my Mom and my sisters so we could all virtually hug. It was sad, but lovely. I can't wait to hug them all in reality again.
Finally we ended the day with a surprise dinner from Ferrari's! YUM! I love their fish tacos and fries! :)
It was a great day all things considered. I hope you all had a lovely day too. <3

How are you guys getting your exercise?

I've been jogging a lot and I find it can be very peaceful. Leila has been having a grand old time riding her bike and I think we're going to do a ride bike and run event this afternoon for her birthday (she's 11 today!) ... however that slightly smiling teen on the left? He has no interest in the great outdoors. NONE. I basically have to pick him up and
drag him outside and even then he's likely to run back inside as fast as possible. Do you have any idea how to get him out there and reasonably happy? Or am I trying to do the impossible? For school he's supposed to get outside and exercise 30 minutes everyday. That has not happened. :( Do you have any handy tips as to how this is possible? Love to hear your ideas! Put them in the comments.

Summer reading will be here before we know it and we need your help!

We are still planning on doing the dog tag and beads thing this year, except we will have baggies of beads for you. We also plan on giving away weekly books and having grand prizes.
But what are those grand prizes this year?
A friend last year wanted to make sure that we did a telescope again and the Target gift cards are always popular, but is there anything else that you would like and that would encourage you to keep reading?
Think big, but not too big because our Friends group is extremely supportive, but we don't have THAT much. :) Anyways, let us know what you think in the comments below!
